Hadley Castille “200 Lines: I Must Not Speak French”

Louisiana Music Hall of Fame honoree and Cajun fiddler Hadley Castille died yesterday at the age of 79. In 1991, Castille made a monumental recording entitled 200 Lines: I Must Not Speak French. The title tells the story of Castille's own punishment for speaking his native Cajun French in high school in Leonville, LA, as he was doomed to stay after school and write "I Shall Not Speak French" 200 times. Rare video of Castille explaining and performing this one song protest that played a significant role in reversing Louisiana's 'culture of shame'. Chilling performance, everyone should watch.
