Is The New York Times Reading Our Newsletter?

Dear Dear,

I think The New York Times knows we're going to Panama.

Panama City featured in their travel section this week. And I found
this article on the San Blas islands in their archives:
http://tinyurl.com/sanblas

The thing I like about these articles (aside from the fact that
they're written about the destination we've chosen for our next live
workshop on travel writing and photography) is that, as well as making
for a great read, their composition is simple.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to slight these writers in
the faintest.

I'm simply saying that most great travel articles aren't rocket
science. They're easy to read, they're insightful, and they tell a
story without the writer getting in the way.

I've asked freelance travel writer and author of The Ultimate Travel
Writer's Program, Jennifer Stevens, to show you how to write an
article like this tomorrow. I'll pass her step-by-step advice along
to you as soon as she sends it my way.

In the meantime, here are a few issues in our archives that will help
you take the kinds of pictures editors need to illustrate articles
like this. And also a few on how, specifically, to submit the article
Jen instructs you to write tomorrow, for publication.

Here are the links I recommend:

** This photo tip on the Rule of Thirds is always worth a re-read:
http://tinyurl.com/rulethirds. If you do nothing else, follow this
one vital tip. It will dramatically improve your photography.

** And since we know that people pictures sell best, here's one on
where to crop. Keep this in mind when you're out and about taking the
pictures so that you don't have to fix them in Photoshop or Lightroom
when you return: http://tinyurl.com/wheretochop

When you're ready to send your piece to a publication's editor, go
here...

** The first step in sending your article (or article idea) to an
editor, is writing a letter to the editor to ask if she's interested.
You'll find advice on doing that, here:
http://tinyurl.com/howtowritequery

** You'll also find a sample "query letter," here:

Stay tuned for tomorrow's article from Jen on how, exactly, you can
write something like the above mentioned article on Panama City.

And remember that we still have 17 free San Blas vacations left. They
go to the first 17 people that register for our upcoming event in
Panama this December 5-7. You'll find details here:

P.S. Tomorrow I'm announcing an offer to test drive our new food
writing program for just $2.95. With this offer, you can order today
and try the program for 30 days for just $2.95. If you're not
completely satisfied, return it. You won't pay a penny more.

That, or keep it and you'll be billed the balance after those 30 days
(just $156.05).

This program is an amazing deal when you consider that your very first
article paycheck could easily cover the cost for this program... and
then some! And inside you'll find not only advice on writing about
food and including food and dining recommendations in your travel
articles, but you'll also get a list of over 60 publications looking
for food articles right now. AND a list of trade publications that
often pay more than magazines (even though most writers don't know
that).
