About Art History: Color as Field

  from Shelley Esaak

Greetings!

My fabulous dog is a Border Collie and Australian Shepherd cross, tri-color underneath, with a white blaze down to his black nose and brown "eyebrows." The rest of him, save for a white ruff, is pitch black. This might help explain how a person could trip over him in the dark, smack headfirst into a wall and concuss herself. I *knew* I had bonked my noggin unduly hard last week when I read the next day that a Spanish woman is prepared to have Salvador Dali's body exhumed in order to prove that she is his illegitimate daughter. Dali a womanizer? Wow. *That's* a brain-jiggler, for sure.

Black dog owners, take note: wear a bike helmet on the way to the bathroom in the dark! Everybody: have a great week!

Color as Field

I'll be very honest with you: I am an unabashed Helen Frankenthaler fan girl. Also? I think it's unfair that she's had to wait around for about 50 years in order to get full credit for dragging art into a whole new dimension, where color became THE subject matter. I hope you'll forgive my enthusiasm for this exhibition...

Are You Missing Any Works of Art?

I'm a little burnt out from cases of assumed names of artists and/or collectors lately. Check out the image galleries of William Kingsland's collection, courtesy of the FBI, and see if you can ID anything that went missing in the past 40 years.

SFMOMA Deinstalling Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings

Here's a deinstallation that's not going to be temporary while Muckety-Muck Construction Firm builds a new Period Room. In just under a month, these LeWitt wall drawings will be gone, baby, gone. Catch 'em while you can, San Francisco Bay area fans.
